![]() ![]() Michael Savio and Rayne Antrim, Paste’s TV and Music internsĮditor’s Note: We’ve included renditions from our Paste Studio sessions for a few of the songs from Bridgers and Baker. That leaves us (remarkably) with 100 songs from some of this generation’s brightest songwriters that, in turn, make you want to dance, scream, hug your best friend and, perhaps, weepily slide down the shower wall. That means none of Better Oblivion Community Center’s catalog will be featured in the list, Baker’s Little Oblivions (Remixes) EP has been disregarded and many of Dacus’ excellent covers, including her rollicking rendition of Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark,” won’t make the cut either. Some ground rules, for efficiency’s sake: We’ve nixed remixes, covers (with one exception), demos, live versions and collaborative efforts in which the artist is merely featured. And, of course, taste levels differ, and what enamors us to one piece of music over another is about as subjective as what orientates one person to chocolate or vanilla, summer or winter. ![]() ![]() Yet, while certain songs hover above the rest, some do get lost in the ether when stacked against the whole breadth of their oeuvres. Baker, Bridgers and Dacus don’t really have any clunkers. To celebrate the band’s debut full-length LP, we’re taking a look at each member’s solo catalog and ranking every track from them. Their strength as boygenius lies not just in their ability to congeal together, but in the distinct styles, stories, and craftsmanship they bring to the table. Baker’s powerhouse voice imbues her songs with a heart-stopping measure of sorrow, wavering between despondence one moment, spiritual emancipation the next Bridgers’ deadpan witticisms and knack for off-kilter arrangements belie her instincts toward gothic imagery and breezy psychedelia Dacus’s sprawling, diaristic odes to self-preservation and self-ascension can be as zealous as they are biting. The trio’s intricate music speaks to a niche audience within a widening culture, both timeless and decidedly au courant they’re too cool to be Sally Rooney characters, yet too idiosyncratic to populate the Top-40 charts.īut each member has a wholly original artistic vision and viewpoint that reverberate throughout their own solo discographies. What do you get when you take three best friends, who just happen to be some of the leading ladies of modern indie rock, and throw them in a recording studio together? Apparently, you are blessed with boygenius (Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus), whose debut EP was named as one of the 50 best supergroup albums of all time in 2020 by us for good reason: The three gel so perfectly, and it seems preordained that they would have teamed up in 2018 to release a batch of six songs to critical acclaim. ![]() ![]() ![]() This time, Atomsk will generate two output files: "copper.cfg" and "copper.xsf". Note that, in addition to the file name "copper.cfg", we added the keyword "xsf" at the end of the command line. & 'atomsk.exe' -create fcc 3.597 Cu copper.cfg xsf This time, let us write the data both in CFG format and in XSF format: Copper (symbol Cu) has an fcc lattice just like aluminium before, so it will also contain 4 atoms, but the lattice constant will be different: a=3.597 Å for copper. Now for a change, let us construct a unit cell of copper. This is an important lesson to keep in mind: the number of atoms displayed by a visualization software does not always match the actual number of atoms present in the data file. This is just an artefact of visualization, as we know that there are really only 4 atoms in this system. In its terminal it writes that there are "32 atoms" in the system. The system is very small (it is only one unit cell), so Atomeye automatically duplicates it twice in each direction. Here we witness a behaviour that is specific to Atomeye. Now, let us open the exact same file "aluminium.cfg" with another visualization software, Atomeye: We can see that OVITO displays the Cartesian frame of reference (coloured arrows labeled X, Y, Z at the bottom left corner), the contours of the unit cell (black box), as well as the fours atoms as expected (grey spheres). Such a file in CFG format can be opened with OVITO, a visualization and analysis software designed by Alexander Stukowski and co-authors, thus allowing to visualize the unit cell in 3-D: Note that atom positions are given in reduced coordinates in this file format, i.e. Then appear the vectors of the unit cell (lines starting with H0), followed by some keywords, and finally the atom mass and chemical symbol, and their positions. The second line (starting with #) is a comment that is automatically generated by Atomsk. The first line indicates that the system contains 4 atoms. This file complies with the CFG format, as defined by Ju li for his visualization software Atomeye. # Fcc Al oriented X= Y= Z=.Ī = 1.000000000 Angstrom (basic length-scale) It is a text file, and if you open it in a text editor (like Notepad) it will look like this: With this command, Atomsk will write the atom positions in the output file "aluminium.cfg". In addition to this, the app doesn’t require users to know any coding. It supports conversion to several file formats, including MP4, MP3, MKV, and more. The application is free to download and provides an easy-to-use dashboard with built-in presets. If you’re looking for a powerful and feature-rich video converter, then look no further and download HandBrake for Windows. However, for experts, the application provides all the functions and tools needed for a seamless conversion process. For newbies, this may turn out to be a challenge. While the app has powerful features, it doesn’t have a user-friendly interface. HandBrake is a powerful video converter that you can use to rip files and convert them to a format of your choice. However, once you get started, you will be able to convert videos using the available presets. That is because the application doesn’t explain its video encoding functions, nor does it provide any tutorials. Unfortunately, if you’re a beginner, you will face some difficulties when starting out with HandBrake. However, if you wish to work manually, you can head to the app’s available tabs, customize encoding functions, apply filters and effects, tweak the frame rate, modify codecs, and crop and join videos. ![]() To quickly convert a video, all you have to do is upload the video onto the software, select a built-in present, and click on convert. Furthermore, HandBrake encodes videos at a very fast speed, ensuring that you don’t have to wait long when using the software. The application has a feature that lets you add any subtitle file or chapter marker to any video you wish to convert. In case you want to add markers or subtitles to any file, HandBrake can help with that as well. However, users should note that they will need to have the right codecs installed for batch processing. Since the application supports bulk conversions, you can select one option and apply it to all available files. With the help of the available filters, you can easily crop, scale, and deblock videos. This means you can use the app to add filters, change the frame and dimensions, and do much more! Apart from converting from one format to another, users tweak any file they want. In case there aren’t any, you can encode the file with the tool. When it comes to copy protection, HandBrake only processes DVDs and Blu-Ray files without any copyright. In addition to this, HandBrake comes with built-in presets that can quickly help you convert videos. ![]() You can also opt for the universal profiles that are present by default. To make things easier, the application lets you create customized profiles for all your devices. The run of straight RnB tracks to follow are a bit of a low point in the tracklist. The shorter appearances from less trendy artists like Injury Reserve, JID, slowthai and Vince Staples, deliver on their verses, neatly complimenting Aminé’s presence. Young Thug’s appearance on “Compensating” overshoots the track’s light, summery vibe, although he does stick to the track’s focus on attempting to make amends for a romantic transgression. The features across the album largely succeed in supporting Aminé without stealing focus. It’s easily one of the best tracks on the album despite the disappointing slowthai appearance. Aminé’s bars on here are some of his best on the album though, and Vince Staples comes in with a standout verse after a quality beat switch. The UK rapper sounds great over this beat as well it’s a shame he doesn’t get more time to work with it. “Pressure In My Palms” however doesn’t suffer similarly, although the brief four-bar verse from slowthai does. The consecutive tracks “Shimmy” and “Pressure In My Palms” are a return to more of a rap focus, although “Shimmy” is a little too short to register as a real highlight. “Let’s go ahead and make us all cry” is a nice intimate moment though that tugs at the heartstrings a little more powerfully. His piercing delivery on the track “Mama” is a bit of an earsore, and some of the attempts at sentimentality on this track come off rather cringey and misjudged as he tells his mother that she’s the only woman in his life who makes him smile. There are times throughout the album though where he does go very high pitched and it can sometimes be a little hard to swallow. However, I think Walker should probably have sung the chorus alone and Aminé not tried to keep up to her or hold her back. The melodic rapping on tracks like “Can’t Decide” stays head-bobbing throughout the slightly underwhelming lyrics on the track and his chemistry with Summer Walker on the duet “Easy” is quite enjoyable. ![]() “Woodlawn”, which title references Aminé’s Portland neighbourhood, is supported by a strong woodwind based trap beat with a rush of air-punching in on the chorus, while “Roots” has a more traditional soulful hip hop beat, typically suited to both guest singer Charlie Wilson and featured rapper JID, who brings his usual quotable punchlines.Īminé’s singing begins to take over from here, and it does vary in quality across the album, and the lyrical quality starts to dissipate as well. Tracks like “Burden”, “Woodlawn” and “Roots” feature some impressive rhymes and creative lyricism narrating Aminé’s come up or his artistic intentions. This opening movement is defined by strong rapping, which gives way to more singing in the second half. It’s a good tone-setter for the album kicking off its strong opening run. This is evident on the opening track “Burden”, a somewhat tasteful and laid–back cut with an alarming soul wail sampled and looped into the beat, beside the jazzy bassline, twanging guitar and stiff, short drum pattern. Although some of the detours into different genres don’t go over too well, like his eerily accurate Drake impression on the track “Riri”, it’s a versatile listen that straddles the lines between Trap, RnB and more traditional and experimental forms of hip hop quite nicely. Limbo doesn’t outstay its welcome like many albums in its style, and it’s not overly constrained by that style either. However, there are still some areas where more graft might be hoped for in the future. ![]() The versatility and humour showcased on Limbo justifiably turned some heads, my own included. Despite his appearance on the 2017 XXL Freshman cover, it has only been with the release of this sophomore record that he has come to be regarded in some circles as a force to be reckoned with in hip hop. Portland rapper/singer Adam Aminé Daniel isn’t the sort of artist who had piqued my interest until recently. ![]() ![]() ![]() I've been searching for a solution for a few days now and I even took a short break from the game just to come back and have the problem still happening. That way, hardcore players could get an extra challenge while everyone else could play the game and enjoy it without all the tedious repetition. Then have a Hardcore Mode with the aging mechanic that slowly transforms you into a glass cannon and ends with permadeath. In Normal Mode, simply have the game function as an action game with check points and normal progression. That being said, the aging mechanic would work well as an optional track for hardcore players. The kung fu moves at your disposal are fun to play around with but they’re buried inside a game that’s bogged down by a roguelike gimmick that sounds cool on paper but adds very little to the game’s core experience. Sifu has some truly great combat mechanics and taking down bad guys is incredibly satisfying. I’d much rather simply die and return to a check-point with all my progression intact than respawn where I died but only get a limited number of lives before starting over. You can still hone your skill just as much but with less tedium. I’d much rather play through more levels fewer times than fewer levels lots of times. In the same way that open worlds often end up padding the core of a video game with boring fetch quests and repetitive crafting and scavenging, the repetition in a roguelike starts to feel like a stand-in for actual content. I’m honestly just very tired of the roguelike craze. Here it’s just rinse and repeat, wade through all the myriad progression options, and then start over again and again. ![]() At least in a game like Returnal you’ll get some randomness and you can make serious headway with some of the game’s early unlocks. I have very little motivation to play the same level again and again. This is confusing and frustrating.Īnd it just gets tiresome after a while. Skills you unlocked and started playing with are gone, which means you can’t really rely on mechanics you had come to rely on in a previous run. Losing everything each time you age up and die means you’ll have to start over each run with only the basics at your disposal. Permanently unlocking skills is a tedious affair that requires you to purchase the same skill several times-without actually upgrading that skill in the process. Unless you permanently unlocked any of the skills you purchased in your previous runs, they’ll be gone. The aging mechanic has a downside: After 70, you’ll die for good and have to start over at the beginning of whichever stage you’re on with most of your progression wiped. It’s a shame that most of your progression is wiped away when your run is over, though at least once you complete a level and beat the boss you won’t have to play it again. There are a whole bunch of progression mechanics in Sifu. As you progress you’ll also encounter shrines that allow you to unlock various passive abilities and you can spend XP to unlock skills. As you age, your health bar decreases but your attacks get stronger. I have two words for you: “Free Willy!” Sasha was named the winner of that first face-off, but we mustn’t forget that Anetra slayed the “voguing” mini challenge.
